Their most important function is in the active transport of the molecules across cell membranes, mainly the plasmatic membrane, using the energy generated by ATP hydrolysis. The transporters are classified in subfamilies, from ABCA to ABCH. Genes coding for ABCB, ABCC and ABCG subfamilies are expanded in fungi and associated with multidrug resistance phenotypes. In fungal phytopathogens, ABC transporters act in the efflux of phytoalexins, secondary metabolites from other microorganisms, and fungicides. They are involved in the first line of defense of the pathogen against plant-derived metabolites and reactive oxygen species during the interaction with the host. The broad spectrum of tolerance to different toxins and xenobiotics exhibited by some fungal biocontrol agents is also attributed to the action of ABC transporters. Typically regarded as exporters of molecules produced by other organisms, some ABC transporters are actually involved in the export of metabolites produced by the fungal cells that affect the fitness and virulence of pathogens and the antagonistic properties of biocontrol agents.
