Plants are known to sustain a complex and diverse relationship with many microorganisms, composing what we know as the microbiome. They possess an innate immune system, capable of recognizing well conserved molecular patterns and effectors produced by pathogens that triggers immunity. How the plants defend themselves while at the same time allowing the colonization of non-pathogenic microbes is an intriguing question, with no clear answers, that has started to draw attention recently. In this seminar we are going to give an overview of some strategies employed by non-pathogenic plant associated microbes to avoid plant recognition and colonize plant tissue, describe the mechanisms in which plants recognize non-harmful microbes and demonstrate how some interactions occur at the microbiome level.
